Dietrich Bonhoeffer (4 February 1906 – 9 April 1945) was a German Lutheran pastor, theologian, anti-Nazi dissident, and key founding member of the Confessing Church. His writings on Christianity's role in the secular world have become widely influential, and his book The Cost of Discipleship is described as a modern classic.
But I mention him today for two reasons, because he truly was a man who did not take his eye off the “Great Stag” and resisted many skinny rabbits, some that would have saved his life and because he was instrumental in teaching us to “pray” the psalms.
Dietrich Bonhoeffer Anti-Nazi Resistant and Resolute Hero
We were to have watched this video at our retreat but did not have the technical support we needed this year. Take 5 minutes and watch it, if you’d like.
1. What was his big decision?
2. Many people were bambozzled by the complexity of what was going on in Germany and unable to act. He was the leader of the confessing church vs. the Nazified State Church. What was the confessing Church?
3. He was constantly asking the Lord, “Now what do I do?” He was asking himself, when do we, as Christians, say we must stop Hitler with violence? What do you think of violence for Christ?
4. Bonhoeffer knew, If you are worshipping God you are called to act! And that there is a joy in obeying God. Many were acting fearfully! But Bonhoeffer knew that it was better to do something unto the Lord even if you turn out to be wrong. Does this surprise you?
5. He was arrested for his part in getting 7 Jews out of Germany and later involved in the plot to assassinate Hitler. What do you think of this bold action?
6. Bonhoeffer had a supernatural ability to hear what God was saying. And a robust faith – Giving his life to Christ, gave him a strange freedom. “I am already supposed to be dead to myself.” Can you identify with this?
7. Astoundingly resolute, extorting them to act. Encouraging his seminarians to pray the psalms. Have you ever tried praying the psalms?
