The Little Things
When you get up and offer to refill someone’s drink,
When you really listen after you ask,
What do you think?
That’s the little things.
When you apologize beforehand for being forgetful,
And encourage others to just remind you.
When you know someone is having a hard time,
And you tell them where to find you.
That’s the little things.
Knowing when someone needs some space and letting them be,
Knowing when your friends need some love ,
And saying this one’s on me.
Making eye contact with a stranger,
Giving them a smile and a nod,
Or letting someone else have that parking spot,
That’s the little things.
It’s the little things that make us valued and seen.
Like we forgot what a thank you or you are welcome really means.
Like a smile from a stranger,
Or a small gesture from a friend,
Shows you not who someone claims to be
But who that person really is.
We focus so much on grand gestures.
We brag that we are protesters.
We want to be woke!
So proud that we vote!
At a moment’s notice we can regurgitate long lectures,
About the patriarchy, racism, equity or fairness.
But when the barista asks,
Welcome, how are you?
Our response is…uh huh, a Grande latte with an extra shot of…
You know what? Make it two.
A text out of nowhere from a friend reads,
Just thinking about you and wanted to say you are a star.
When someone lets you into heavy traffic,
And you wave a thank you to their car.
That’s the little things.
The very little things.
We often change who we are,
Because we think that’s what others want from us.
But if we don’t spend enough time trying to be the best version of us,
We’ll never know what we like about ourselves
Enough to learn how to love us.
Because when everything is said and done,
Sure, we can talk big issues,
We can debate how to make space.
But how will people feel when they remember your face?
How do you change their day in the littlest of ways?
That’s the little things.
The very little things.
When talking to someone in person,
You don’t stop to check your watch.
You put your phone away.
You let someone go ahead of you, anywhere,
Because you are not in a rush today.
Chatting with someone who always goes unnoticed,
Or when you see someone’s hands are full,
And you hold the door open.
That’s the little things.
The very little things.
Okay, every time we see a baby what do we do?
We smile open our eyes wide like a game
Of peek-a-boo.
We can’t help it.
You know you do it too.
It’s got to be ingrained in our DNA.
And it says, “I see you!”
Over time the message changes to
I can’t. Not now. Go find something to do.
We have to learn to handle rejection.
We got to know our self-worth.
And how to cultivate some protection.
And we still need to feel seen.
A chemical reaction happens inside your brain
When someone smiles as you enter the room.
And now that you know that,
Don’t you want that person smiling to be you?
That’s the little things.
The very little things.
Sometimes the people you think are friends
Really cause a lot of stress.
But the people who feel the closest,
Are the ones that took a million little steps.
It can’t be done to impress someone else.
You have to do all the little things,
Because you are doing it for yourself.
People know who you are because of the little things.
All the little things!
People can feel your whole heart from the little thing.
The very little things!
People know who you are because of the little things.
All the little things!
The very little things!
